Ironing Guide: Getting Wrinkles Out of Cuban Collar Shirts

Mint Cuban polo half sleeve shirt from BLISS

Why the Cuban Collar Is Different to Iron

Unlike a stiff button-down collar, the Cuban collar on shirts like our Full Black Half Sleeve and Mint Cuban Polo is meant to sit flat and relaxed, not sharply pressed. Over-ironing it into a stiff point actually works against the silhouette the shirt was designed for.

Iron Slightly Damp

Cotton-blend Cuban shirts iron out far more easily when the fabric is slightly damp rather than bone dry. If the shirt has already dried, a light mist of water before ironing makes a real difference.

Start With the Collar, Flat

Lay the collar flat and iron it in the direction it naturally sits — open and relaxed, not folded upward. This preserves the open-neck look that makes styles like the Maroon With White Stripe and White Fabric Chain Print shirts work as a breathable warm-weather layer.

Move to the Yoke and Shoulders

Iron the shoulder yoke next, working from the seam outward. This is the area most likely to hold a crease from hanging, especially on printed pieces like the Red Fabric With Leaves Print shirt where a stubborn crease is more visible against the pattern.

Sleeves and Cuffs

Since our Cuban shirts are half sleeve, focus ironing on the short cuff edge and the seam where the sleeve meets the body — these are the spots that show the most visible wrinkling after a wash.

Body and Hem Last

Iron the body in long, even strokes, working around the button placket carefully to avoid pressing marks into it. Finish with the hem, which on half sleeve Cuban shirts sits at a length meant to be worn untucked, so keep it flat rather than creased.

Heat Setting Matters

Use a medium setting for cotton-blend Cuban shirts — too hot can leave a shine on darker colors like the Silver Fabric With Black or Black Fabric With White Geometric prints, which is hard to reverse.

Skip Ironing Altogether

If you're short on time, hanging a Cuban shirt in a steamy bathroom for ten minutes after a shower will relax most wrinkles without ever touching an iron — a useful trick for the Pink & Purple Mix shirt or any print you don't want to risk under direct heat.
